LUNA - 2012
From Lanzarote to Düsseldorf
My name is Barbara. It all began in September 2012. I landed with Michael, my husband, in Lanzarote looking forward to our 2 weeks holidays.
When arriving in our hotel room, we opened the patio door and discovered between big lava rocks a tiny kitten crying in despair.
We immediately took care of the tabby kitten, brought her food and drinking water several times a day. She grew attached to us and we gave her the name of Luna.
After a few days it became clear that we had to bring Luna back home. Not far from the hotel, we found one of Freddy's Cat House feeding stations, with a donation box and a mobile phone number. We called Freddy and met him later that day.
When Freddy arrived at the feeding station, we were amazed how many cats suddenly appeared from nowhere. After an emotional conversation, Freddy agreed to help us.
A few days before leaving Lanzarote, we put Luna in a fabric pet carrier bag bought in a Chinese shop. We brought her to Freddy's. This became her first home. She made friends with two of Freddy's cats, Bim and Bo.
We taught Luna to walk on the lead (we wanted to make sure she would not escape), brought her to the Vet to get vaccinated and chipped. We also arranged Luna's pet passport. The last thing Luna needed was a flight ticket, where she would travel as a pet in cabin.
When it was time to depart, we were all sad. Freddy and us had become good friends.
At the airport, I was carrying Luna around in her bag. Suddenly an awful smell aroused, Luna had relieved herself, the bag was all dirty and wet.
I run to the bathroom and washed it. The bag was drenched, so I put my jacket within to keep Luna dry.
We then queued for safety control and a bad smell rose again to my nose. The bag was still clean, but because I held Luna while washing the bag, my blouse got dirty and I did not notice it. Again I had to run to the bathroom and clean myself up.
The flight went smooth and Luna remained calm. We drove back home where our 3 cats were waiting for us: Gina (15), Lucy (3) and Lucky (2).
Back home we freed Luna, and all parties looked at each other with great suspicion. Luckily, Luna found the cat toilet almost immediately. One less worry!
The days passed with rhythms of growling and hissing.
One day, Luna decided to face these unfriendly cats. Gina and Lucy decided to keep their distances until today, but for Lucky a heart warming love story began. Luna and lucky have become inseparable.
Today we can say that we handled for the best. Luna has found a loving home and has grown into a spoiled cat just as Gina, Lucy and Lucky.
If only cats could speak!
